Psoriasis Causes
Psoriasis is a chronic disease affecting 1-3% of the population, and the causes for it still remain largely unknown. Two factors seem to be at play -genetic predisposition, as well as immune system dysfunction. The latest research reveals that in Psoriasis, immune system responds by inflammation and production of extra layers of skin. Specifically, T-cells, special type of white blood cells cause this reaction. Whenever there is excessive skin growth, there is proliferation of T-cells found underneath.
Genes might be responsible for the erroneous T-cells behaviour however their role is not clearly understood. While genes are involved in the process, unlike in other hereditary disease, Psoriasis patients might not necessarily have any close relatives suffering from the disease.
Other factors include environmental triggers, infections and other triggers, such as stress, medications, injuries or traumas.
Psoriasis symptoms may appear as red skin patches covered with silvery scales that can be found anywhere from elbows and knees to scalp, palms, soles and genitals. It can manifest as small soft scales(typically in children), dry cracked skin with occasional bleeding, itchy and burning spots on the skin, stiff and swollen joints(Psoriatic arthritis) and hardened ridged nails(Nail Psoriasis).
Different types of Psoriasis include: Plaque Psoriasis, Scalp Psoriasis, Guttate Psoriasis, Nail Psoriasis, Inverse Psoriasis, Pustular Psoriasis, Erythrodermic Psoriasis and Psoriatic Arthritis.
Psoriasis can range in its severity from being a mere nuisance to extremely painful chronic condition. It is idiosyncratic- it can increase or diminish in intensity without any apparent causes. In any case, Psoriasis is commonly associated with discomfort, feeling of embarrassment and shame about one's appearance, unease and even decreased ability to perform common tasks. Some home remedies and self help techniques may help mitigate Psoriasis symptoms, although they don't cure the root of the disease. The following may help soothe the painful effects of Psoriasis : soaking in lukewarm baths, especially with added salts and oils, heavy use of moisturizers (preferably oil-based as they retain moisture better), controlled exposure to sunlight, healthy diet and abstaining from alcohol.
